Inflammation and CBD

Inflammation is something we hear very often in social media but many of us wouldn’t know how to explain it. This body reaction can be experienced in different forms and lengths of time depending on the cause and general health condition. The good news is that there are natural remedies like cannabinoids that may help with inflammation.

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is a natural, biological response of our body to foreign substances entering our system. This reaction is an immune response when an intruder is detected which can be anything from a cactus thorn sticking on our skin to broken bones and viruses. All of this can cause irritation and infections that our body tries to fight off.

When irritation or infection starts the body sends signals to the immune system (using immunoglobulins) to assess the situation. Immunoglobulins present in our body converge on the site of infection to fix it. There are 5 classes of immunoglobulins:

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) – Most present in our bloodstream. Responsible for the defense against infection.

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) – Provides protection on the mucosal surfaces against microorganisms attacking the mucosal areas of the body.

Immunoglobulin M (IgM) – The first immunoglobulin to take part in the immune response. Responsible for agglutination and bacteriolysis.

Immunoglobulin B (IgB) – Controls the release of immunoglobulins in B cells.

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) – Low concentration in the body but increases if there is an allergy. Releases histamines and cytokines that inhibit inflammation.

Now, these antibodies react to mitigate or initiate healing on the site of infections. But there are 2 types of inflammation:

Acute Inflammation – Mostly localized to the injured area. It will fade away once the infection is healed by taking medications.

Chronic Inflammation – when it lasts for long periods of time. Over time, chronic inflammation can even damage healthy cells which may lead to cancer, heart diseases, arthritis, diabetes, and other conditions.

One of the most common action plans for inflammation is to prescribe NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), Steroids, and supplements which can be very effective. However, over/long-term use of NSAIDs and Steroids can lead to long term side effects. On the other hand, naturopathic physicians may follow a holistic approach prescribing supplements and natural remedies.

Inflammation and CBD

Some research suggests that CBD (Cannabidiol) is a potent substance that can counteract inflammation. CBD, like other cannabinoids, interacts with the receptors CB1 and CB2 activating the ECS (Endocannabinoid System). This process encourages an effective response from the immune system. Cannabinoids like CBD and CBG have the potential of being a natural alternative against any type of inflammation. Many recent studies have shown that these phytocannabinoids have high amounts of antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties.

Each body is different, and the type of cannabinoids will depend on many factors. If you have never tried CBD before, we always recommend starting with a small dosage and an easy delivery method, like liquid gels or topicals. We also encourage you to do your own research and listen to your body.
