CBD Skincare: How to Start your Skincare Routine

Skincare may be intimidating for some and easy for others. The skin is the biggest organ in our body. It is part of the Integumentary System which comprises the skin (epidermis and dermis), and other glands. It performs different functions like barrier function, thermoregulation, excretion, sensation, and chemical synthesis.

These functions are very important to keep our overall health. So taking care of it is essential rather than superficial. But how do you keep healthy skin? Skincare doesn’t mean or start only with topical products. Actually, the best way to start with your skincare routine is from the inside out. Good nutrition, CBD skincare, pro and prebiotics, and hydration can be the key for glowy, clean, and healthy-looking skin.

From the inside out

Skincare starts with hydration and nutrition. Spending money only on topical products but not taking care of your gut health and digestion is like taking pain meds without treating the root of your pain. Here are a few things you can integrate into your daily routine:

More Water: Water is obviously the number step to improve the aspect of your skin. Experts recommend between 12 and 15 cups of water per day.

Pre- and probiotics: skin health starts in your digestive system. Pre- and probiotics help balance your good gut bacteria and maintain healthy digestion. This will ultimately help with nutrients absorption and we promise you will see the results in your skin! Prebiotics can be naturally found in foods like bananas, garlic, onions, among others. While probiotics can be taken from foods like yogurt, kefir, and pickles. If you think you are not getting enough through your diet you can always take natural supplements.

Cannabinoids: CBD, CBG, and CBN are known to have properties that may help with several health conditions and overall wellness. Have you thought about how it may affect your skin? CBD for skincare can be very beneficial as it is high in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which makes it perfect as an active ingredient for your skin. Study after study has shown that it can help with acne, redness, inflammation, and even dark spots. CBN is the secret cannabinoid that is high in anti-bacterial properties and it can also be beneficial for our skin. You can incorporate cannabinoids as natural supplements and also for topical use.

Starting your skincare routine

If you are just getting started with your skincare routine, we got you covered! The first step is to know what type of skin you have: normal, dry, oily, or a combination. Identifying your skin type and shade is very important. The color of your own skin comes with its own positive and negative characteristics. You can check the Fitzpatrick Classification of Skin Phototypes here.

Other things to consider is if your skin presents any specific conditions such as acne, irritation, inflammation, dark spots, etc. This is going to help you build your skincare regime. But remember, if it’s something that concerns you at a health level always consult with a health care provider like a dermatologist or a naturopath.

Now that you know your skin a bit better, you can start building your custom skincare routine. Simply follow the steps and choose the right products for you.

Cleanser. This is the very first and important step. Depending on your skin type you’ll want to choose an oil-free to cleanse or perhaps if your skin is extremely sensitive and dry an oil-based cleanser. The key is to try the product and if it leaves your skin dry and rough that means is not the right product for you. Experts recommend washing your face once a day or twice if really needed. Pro-tip: use a toner or micellar water in the morning to cleanse and wash with a cleanser at night.

Facemask. Facemasks are a treat to your skin but don’t need to be part of your daily routine. Ideally, you want to do this step 1-2 times per week after your skin is clean and dry. CBD skincare products like CBD-infused facemasks can be a savior, it helps to reduce the extra production of sebum giving you back the natural glow and moisture. Choose one that also has other natural active ingredients depending on your skin type. CBD skincare is definitely a must!

Toner. Don’t skip this step! Toners can help balance your skin pH levels. Choose a toner that addresses your skin type.

Serum. Serums are a lightweight product with a higher concentration of active ingredients compared to regular moisturizers. There are many different types you can pick from depending on your skin type. This step also helps to boost hydration and other active ingredients from your moisturizer.

Moisturizer. Finding the correct moisturizer is important especially at night. It acts like a seal keeping all the other active ingredients while providing moisture and hydration to your skin.

Remember, just like any other habit it needs time to get used to it and do it every day. But if you do, you’ll be pleased with the results of having healthier skin.
